General information
There are some basic facts in connection with safes you should know.
Prevention

To security equipment, thus also to safes it particularly applies that most of us only pay attention to them after a harmful event occurs. Home, family, property and valuables are the most important in your life. Make sure you do not belong among the many people whose assets have fallen victim of burglary, theft or fire. If you provide safe storage for your valuables in time, burglars will look for easier targets.

To do this, you must spend on security products. This is not necessarily joyful, but do not forget, to spend on security is worth it. So you can have your assets, office, home or house safe and secure even when you are not there. Do not underestimate the risk, prevent the incident.

If possible, choose a certified safe and ask our colleagues for advice.

Risks threatening your valuables
Theft

Locking away your valuables in a safe protects you against sneak thieves. Even the simplest safe is capable to provide this function. What matters here only is that valuables are not laying around without being locked away, for example on a table or shelf, from where anyone could steal them in an unguarded moment.
In the event of a burglary this is not the case. In a situation when a burglar has more time to damage the safe, a simple plate cabinet is not sufficient any more. A safe here has to endure a long-term physical attack, without letting access to the valuables in it.

Most burglars arrive with a set of opening tools and try out various opening techniques. However, the more time goes by during a burglary or attempted breach, the greater the risk of being detected. So the burglars rarely take a long time to stay indoors. If more time is required than usual there is a good chance they will give it up. Make sure to maximize the needed time of getting inside at you and that the good quality safe makes the burglar's attempt as miserable as possible.

If possible, do not place the safe to a highly visible, bold location. If the burglars had come across a safe it will be assumed that you store valuables in it, and they will make every effort to take away its contents, or even the whole safe itself. Therefore always make sure that the safe is properly anchored.

Fire

Fire posing a threat to valuables can occur any time. Fire may be caused by a candle left without supervision, a poorly put-out cigarette, a gas leakage, purposive arson, poor insulation, short circuit or even a lightning strike.

Those few hours of protection provided by fire-resistant cabinets are usually sufficient for the firefighters to arrive to the scene and extinguish the fire, thus for the valuables to escape unharmed. Whenever you can, choose a safe with a longer resistance period.

Do not forget that storage media (USB, CD, DVD, etc.) are more sensitive to heat than paper. Do not store storage media in a fire-resistant document cabinet, for this purpose use a data cabinet.

If you want to ensure protection against theft and fire at once, choose a fire-resistant document or data cabinet combined with a value limit.

100% protection does not exist

It is important to know that valuables cannot be completely protected. 100% protection can be strived for but rarely accomplished. Most of the safes are capable to withstand a specific type of attack for a certain limited time. To pass through security devices is a matter of time and a preparedness. If the attacker is competent enough and has the appropriate tools, it is only a question of time, before he can break through the line of defense and open the safe.
This does not mean however that the mechanical security elements, such as safes, would not be useful. Their primary function is to hold up the attacker, to provide physical resistance. More sophisticated burglary safes of higher quality and stronger structure ensure better resistance.

The level of security provided by a security element is also influenced by all the other elements. It is not worth to establish protection focusing only on one element. There is no point in having a high-end safe lock on a safe for example, if the structure of the safe is weak. The burglar will make a move wherever it is easier to reach target. Your valuables are more protected if you combine the security elements and select them in harmony to each other.

Mechanical security devices on their own are typically not sufficient to establish adequate protection, it is necessary to combine them with electronics. The most common form of this combination is connecting the safe to an electronic indicator (alarm) system. Assault suffered by physical elements is detected by the signaling system and alarm is triggered. An alarm system working with a loud siren and a visual signal is a deterrent and awareness raising force on its own, but it provides much greater security if the alarm signal is sent to a patrol service also. Police or men of the security service arrive in these cases nearly always in time.

It is not always necessary to buy the best and most expensive safe. At selection, the required level of protection is an important aspect, you should choose accordingly. For the temporary storage of smaller valuables the cheapest safe may be enough too, but if you are looking for a lasting protection, it is worth to choose a good quality free standing safe or euro graded safe.
If there are multiple lines of defense, in the first line the defense function has a much more significant role than in the second. If the points of entry into the premises are well protected, the safe's level of protection may be slightly lower.

How secure is the safe you are using?

Answer the following questions to yourself and shed light on the weaknesses of your safe. The more you are aware of the weak points burglars may use at you, the more you can protect yourself.

- Is the lighter than 1000 kg safe properly anchored?
- Is the safe hidden?
- Does the safe have a certificate?
- Is the property insured?
- Did you notify the insurance company of the safe and its contents?
- Have you changed the factory code when you started to use the safe?
- Is the safe connected to an alarm system?
- Does the alarm signal go out to a patrol service?

In case you have replied to any question with NO, please ask our colleague's advice how you could make your safe more secure.

How secure are your habits?

There are many options regarding your own behavior to reduce the risk of burglary. The most important are the following.

- If you are using a safe with key lock, do you keep your key in a secure place?
- When you close your safe, do you remove the key and put it to a secure place?
- If the safe has numeric code lock, do you change your code from time to time?
- Do you always lock your safe before you leave it unattended?
- Does your home insurance reimburse a sufficient amount for you in case of an incident? Is underinsurance an issue?
- Do you have an exact list of your most important valuables with pictures?

If you have answered any of the questions with a NO, you should change your behavior and habits towards effective prevention of theft.

What to do if you catch a thief red-handed?

Do not attempt to hold back the attacker yourself. Leave this task to the police (call 107). Make a note of the suspect's distinctive features, type of the car and the vehicle license plate number.
